At WILSON, we have a rich history that inspires us every day. Our legacy dates back to one of India's first pen manufacturing companies, Wilson Pen Private Limited (formerly known as Balkrishna Pen Private Limited). We take great pride in knowing that our pens were used to draft the Constitution of the largest democracy in the world, Bharat (India), by the legendary Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. With such a prestigious history, our commitment to excellence and innovation remains unwavering. For decades, were at the forefront of pen manufacturing in India, constantly evolving and adapting to meet the ever-changing needs of our customers. Our collaboration with various multinational corporations in the industry allowed us to expand our reach and provide high-quality writing instruments to people all over Bharat. We are proud to be pioneers in this industry, setting high standards for others to follow.
In 1939, Mr. Dwarkadas Jivanlal Sanghvi, alongside his brother, established India’s first pen manufacturing family business by opening a modest pen shop in Calcutta, Bengal. At the time, India relied entirely on imported pens from the United States and England, as the country was still under British rule. In 1941, in response to the threat of bombings in Calcutta, the family relocated to Valsad, Gujarat, where they set up a small manufacturing unit equipped with a lathe machine. The unit initially produced just two fountain pens a day, using ebonite, the only material available for pen production in India.
In 1943, the family moved to Bombay and established a small factory in Dadar, gradually increasing production to 250-300 fountain pens daily. By 1945-46, the facility was relocated to Andheri, where it remains to this day. In 1947, Wilson made history as the first company in India to adopt plastic molding technology, utilizing automatic machines imported from England.
A pivotal moment for the company occurred in 1959 when Kiron Sanghvi, the eldest son of the founder, joined the family business. Choosing to forgo a college education, Kiron was determined to build a pen manufacturing empire that would dominate the Indian market for the next four decades. While studying engineering in Europe, Kiron discovered a Swiss machinery manufacturer, Albe, and by the end of the year, secured a partnership, making Wilson the first Indian company to collaborate with a Western firm in the industry. His fluency in multiple languages—Italian, German, English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, and a bit of French and Spanish—proved instrumental in fostering international relationships. From this point, the company flourished.
In 1960, Wilson became the first company in India to introduce ballpoint pens, followed by the launch of the first retractable ballpoint pen in 1961. This marked the beginning of Wilson's period of rapid growth and innovation, establishing the company as the leader in the Indian writing instruments market. With Swiss expertise, Wilson produced pens that adhered to global standards and expanded its product range to include ballpoint pens, sketch pens, and the iconic Jotter, further solidifying its market position. Over time, Wilson purchased Albe’s shares, becoming fully independent.
Kiron's strategic vision extended beyond domestic borders. In 1969, he initiated exports, sending fountain pens, ballpoint pens, and nibs to countries across the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Africa, including Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Kuwait, Ethiopia, Sudan, Yugoslavia, Poland, Bulgaria, and Hungary. Between 1970 and 1980, Wilson earned six awards for its outstanding export achievements, culminating in the President's Award for top exports. By 1984, Kiron expanded Wilson’s presence in Western Europe, exporting to France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.
Remarkably, 99.9% of India's pen manufacturing companies were founded by former engineers and supervisors from Wilson, a testament to the company's influence on the industry. Kiron’s unwavering commitment to quality led to the early adoption of Total Quality Management (TQM), a cornerstone of Wilson's success. His natural aptitude for industrial and mechanical design allowed him to create innovative tools and machinery that significantly improved both quality and efficiency. During the early years, Kiron single-handedly built Wilson, while his three younger brothers focused on their education. After the passing of the founder in 2002, Kiron continued to lead Wilson until his own passing in 2024.
Today, Wilson is under the stewardship of Kiron’s son, Hersh, and his dedicated team, who are working tirelessly to further elevate the company to new heights.
